Bug Wars

Today we were given a brief which had to be compleated by the end of the day. We were put into small groups where we spoke to a graphic design foundation student. They had been coming up with rough ideas for a form of advertisement which they then commisioned us to compleate.

The product is a new brand of cleaner that needs to be more child friendly. Our graphic student wanted the image to be similar to the film godzilla. He wanted a large insect attacking a city and being stopped by the product.

I really liked this idea because it fits my desire to draw silly characters. Despite the layout of the rough sketches I wanted the insect to be the main element right in the middle of the image. Also in the rough sketches you were able to see elements at ground level. I wanted to character to seem huge in scale so thought it would be better to only have the tops of buildings to give a better feeling of scale.

Considering I only had one day to produce this illustration, I'm really happy with it. Tried out a more complicated method of working which was confusing but has opened up a few more possibilities. Also with more time I would have liked to do more with the night sky. Really like the partially transparent fire effect and intend to use this on future illustrations.
